Junaid Khan’s social period-drama ‘Maharaj’ releases on Netflix

The highly anticipated Yash Raj Films’ period drama ‘Maharaj,’ directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, has finally been released on Netflix.

‘Maharaj’ delves into the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, which was heard in the Bombay Supreme Court. The film explores significant issues from the 1860s, particularly focusing on the leaders of the Pushitmarg sect.

A statement released by Yash Raj Films said: “We are grateful to our judiciary for allowing the release of ‘Maharaj’, a film that celebrates one of the most important social reformers of our country, Karsandas Mulji.

“Karsandas, a hero and a devout Vaishnav, stood for righteousness, protected women and safeguarded his community and faith. ‘Maharaj’ is a tribute to his indomitable fighting spirit and his courage to be on the right side of history.

“Yash Raj Films has a 50-year-old legacy of championing India, its stories, its people, culture & heritage. We have never produced a film that has tarnished the reputation of our country or our countrymen.

“Hope you watch ‘Maharaj’ and join us in saluting Karsandas.”

Earlier this month, a petition filed by a Hindu group led the Gujarat High Court to temporarily halt the film’s release. Despite this setback, the movie has now been made accessible to audiences on Netflix.

Director Siddharth P Malhotra said about the film release: “A film release is almost like the arrival of a child for a film maker.”

Taking to social media, Malhotra penned an emotional note about how the film tells a story that “needs to be told against all odds”. He said that even though the battle to release the film was uphill, they hope the pain and obstacles were worth it as the team is “super proud” of the film, which marks Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s acting debut.”
