In Pictures: Amazon unveils massive India slate of 40 films and series

Amazon Prime Video is betting big on Indian content. At a marquee event in Mumbai the streamer announced that it will more than double its investment in Prime Video India over the next five years and revealed a 40-strong slate, its biggest to date in the country.

The streaming platform recently completed half a decade of super-serving customers in India.

The 40 titles are in the Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages, across new and returning scripted and unscripted original series and co-productions, streaming over the next 24 months. The service has also revealed a foray into original films. Some 70% of the upcoming titles will feature new talent, both in front of and behind the camera.

The event was attended by Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, Kelly Day, VP of international, Amazon Prime Video, James Farrell, head of local originals, Amazon Studios, Gaurav Gandhi, country head, Amazon Prime Video India, Aparna Purohit, head, India originals and Sushant Sreeram, director India SVOD. It was hosted by Karan Johar, Abhishek Bachchan and Sumukhi Suresh.

Purohit said, “Our mission has been to tell compelling, authentic and rooted stories that not just connect with audiences in India but resonate with audiences across the world. We feel humbled that the characters of our shows and films have inspired new archetypes, blazed a new trail, and in fact, become a part of the cultural zeitgeist. As we move forward, we are excited to partner with some of the most prolific creators to bring forth powerful stories across different formats, genres and languages for our customers. We are confident that our upcoming slate of shows and films will transcend all barriers of language, nationality or formats.”
