Digital Review: ‘Code M – Season 2’ (Voot Select)

2020’s ‘Code M’ is now coming with a season two, on ZEE5, bringing back Jennifer Winget and Tanuj Virwani in this army suspense drama. The first season fared well, with Winget making her mark as Major Monica, a fearless and competent army officer who doesn’t limit herself to listening to orders. With the second season, the promise is of more of the same but also with some suspense added in.

The second season sees Major Monica back in full force. When she suspects someone is trying to poison her senior official, she goes about trying to find out who’s behind it and, in true Major Monica fashion, she leaves no stone unturned to catch the culprits. What she comes up against in this season is something quite personal. How will she tackle this internal conflict?

Director Akshay Choubey is back with this second season and he brings the same feels this time, which is fantastic in terms of the consistency of the style and the development of the story. He manages to keep the pace of suspense, excitement, drama and also a little bit of a love story in this second season, which works pretty well and ticks all the boxes, so to speak.

As far as performances go, it’s no surprise that Winget once again shines as Major Monica with her authenticity and tenacity which comes through as consistently as in the first season. She has, upto some extent, lost the glam for this role and this is something quite engaging to see. Winget’s chemistry with Virwani is something quite special and was so in the first season. In this season, this is felt too but it’s with a twist and it brings some familiarity, as expected, aside from the love quotient. Virwani’s character really develops in this season, as Angad, which is something quite out of the blue and it’s really something that is amazing but equally gripping and could lead to a season three for this show. Swanand Kirkire has a valued performance in this season, Atul Kumar is a revelation and the ensemble cast are absolutely fantastic in their respective roles.

To conclude, ‘Code M’ season two achieves a pretty good solid run and grips you as a viewer in all the right places. It weaves an interesting story which culminates in a huge twist which you may not see coming and this is probably the best thing about this second season. It will definitely leave you wanting a third season to see where the characters go and that’s absolutely a sign of a successful part two!
