One of the most romantic festivals celebrated in India, Karva Chauth, is observed by married women, who fast all day long for the good health and long life of their husbands. From what begins with a sargi — a pre-dawn meal or food items given/prepared by mothers-in-law as a way of showering blessings on their daughters-in-law for a blissful married life — ends with the woman breaking her fast after seeing the moon in the night sky through a sieve. Although the festival is meant for married women, it is often seen that unmarried girls too fast for the love of their life as a way to express their love. And since the underlying idea of the festival has over the years evolved to become more about celebrating love for each other than just fasting for the sake of it, there can’t be anyone better at showcasing love and how to express it in more opulent ways than our very own Bollywood films.
BizAsiaLive.com looks back at some of the iconic Karva Chauth moments from Bollywood.
‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (1995)
‘DDLJ’ has a special place in Bollywood when it comes to romance. Like who doesn’t admire the legendary pose of heartthrob King Khan? And the description of this lovey-dovey movie might sound incomplete without the Karva Chauth scene. In fact, this was, indeed, the cutest Karva Chauth scene in Bollywood. The moment when Simran was waiting for Raj and then he arrives, and also apologises for coming late, their tiff definitely touched a chord with many of us. And like all the love stories, they too end up celebrating the festival with love, together.
‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ (1999)
A perfect plot for newly married couples and for those who are madly in love with each other. In fact, the song Chand Chupa Badal Mein has its own importance on the eve of Karva Chauth. The iconic couple Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan added spark to the romantic setting. In fact, this movie and ‘DDLJ’ literally started the trend of girls fasting for their love, even when unmarried.
‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001)
Do you remember a Karan Johar movie that does not have a grand celebration? Definitely, not, as there isn’t any such movie. Johar’s movies are incomplete without a grand celebration and so is ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’. Interestingly, the Karva Chauth scene is filmed with Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan and the two of them are unmarried and totally in love too in the movie. It won’t be wrong to say that they definitely set the bar high for any such romantic scenes. You can feel the blooming romance between the two people who love each other but aren’t married yet. Festivals and traditions like Karva Chauth add value to the purity of their relation.
Does romance know any age? Definitely, not! And this is perfectly proven in this movie, where Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, as a couple, leave behind young couples in their love for each other. A combination of love, romance, and ethics, the movie incorporates all the essentials of a happy family. The Karva Chauth scene in this movie is unique in its own way, where not only the wife but also the husband fasts for his wife. Also, both of them break their fast over the phone, signifying that nothing can impede true love.
‘Ishq Vishk’ (2003)
A coming-of-age romantic comedy film, ‘Ishq Vishk’ saw Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao make their lead debut as lovers. In the film, an unmarried Singh is seen expressing her love to Kapoor while performing the rituals of Karva Chauth. The actress observes the fast and Kapoor manages to break into her house to help her break it at the end of the day.
BizAsiaLive.com wishes all those marking the festival our best wishes for a lovely day.
