BizAsia 2021 Reflections: Nine most loved on-screen jodis

In a year where so many real life celebrity couples tied the knot, there were some on-screen pairings which also made quite an impact.

BizAsia looks back at the year’s best jodis on screen, who were just perfect together.

Sidharth Malhotra & Kiara Advani – ‘Shershaah’
This allegedly real life couple were seen on screen for the first time in ‘Shershaah’ and with them both portrayed real characters, it made their chemistry all the more important. Together, their sweetness and charisma as a twosome really worked well on screen and was appreciated by the audiences.

Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone – ’83’
Yes, this was a given and perhaps inevitable that their on-screen romance as Kapil and Romi Dev in sports film ’83’ would be something that the audiences would look forward to and love when the film finally released. They both sported their real character’s looks for their roles and, as always when they’ve been seen on screen together, created magic as a real and reel life couple.

Aditi Rao Hydari & Konkona Sensharma – ‘Ajeeb Daastaans’
It’s fair to say that ‘Geeli Pucchi’ in anthology film ‘Ajeeb Daastaans’ was the one that many appreciated the most out of all the short films and this is not least because the pairing of Aditi Rao Hydari and Konkona Sensharma was something quite special. You have to watch the film to see their magic on screen but it definitely was magic. These two actresses brought Bharti and Priya to life and they will stay in many viewers’ hearts for some time yet.

Sanya Malhotra & Abhimanyu Dassani – ‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’
Although the film was surrounded by a considerable amount of criticism, there’s no denying that Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani were pretty ace playing Meenakshi and Sundareshwar. Their innocence and cute love story which happens through a long-distance first months of marriage is engaging and giving of a fresh take on such a relationship. They seemed to fit with one another on screen.

Dhruv Sehgal & Mithila Palkar – ‘Little Things S4’
In the final and conclusive fourth season of ‘Little Things’, an Indian Netflix original, Dhruv Sehgal and Mithila Palkar come together once again as Dhruv and Kavya, a couple of who have been in a relationship for a number of years and living in with one another. In this fourth season, they are as good as they were in the previous three seasons but their coming of age love story comes to a new beginning where the viewers are sadly having to end their look-in to this, quite frankly, stroke of genius series.

Farhan Akhtar & Mrunal Thakur – ‘Toofaan’
It’s a sports film and, perhaps only in India, do sports films very often need a romance angle. However, in this Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directorial, Farhan Akhtar and Mrunal Thakur play Ajju and Ananya respectively. They go through some tough times in their lives, with other people involved and have a tragic story within this film. When they both grace the screen, their chemistry always felt natural and completely needed for the way their characters develop.

Taapsee Pannu & Vikrant Massey – ‘Haseen Dillruba’
Netflix’s ‘Haseen Dillruba’ was an interesting film with a rather gory plot twist. Having said that, it did not go unnoticed for us that Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey came together with a positive outcome. They seemed to feed off one another in their performances and it was evident that they were both fantastic in the ways their characters behaved and felt, giving way to sterling performances, and out pourings of love in sometimes very unimaginable ways.

Huma Qureshi & Sohum Shah – ‘Maharani’
The main character in SonyLIV’s ‘Maharani’ was Huma Qureshi’s as Rani Bharti. But, her on-screen bond with Sohum Shah who played her husband Bheema Bharti was definitely one of the film’s highlights. Their scenes were interesting and they definitely came across as if they were both out of depth in the situation their characters were in.

Radhika Madan & Amol Parashar – ‘Feels Like Ishq’
In this anthology film, ‘Save the Date’ was the short film that Radhika Madan and Amol Parashar united in. As Avni and Jay, they come across as two opposites that attract and they end up in a situation in which they frustrate the hell out of one another but eventually realise that they might just want to be with one another. Their freshness as an on-screen couple is what makes them stand out and this is why they’re on our list.

R Madhavan & Surveen Chawla – ‘Decoupled’
‘Decoupled’ on Netflix has been receiving a mixed reception but hopefully, even for those who didn’t like the series itself, they cannot deny that R Madhavan and Surveen Chawla were perfectly cast as Arya and Shruti. Together, they are funny, witty, awkward and comfortable all at the same time and this is what makes them that little bit unique.
